Neurologists/Physiatrist/Physicians

Tasks usually include diagnosis and explanation of diagnosis of ALS as well as explanation of the progression of ALS, and may also include:
  • outlining the types of treatment options available
  • encouraging the setting of realistic goals
  • helping individuals preserve a positive image and maintain morale
  • facilitating problem solving by identifying specific needs or concerns, and finding solutions
  • making necessary referrals to , and mediating with, other healthcare providers
Physiatrist’s tasks may also include:
  • recommending preventative and supportive treatment
  • preventing complications
  • determining which diagnostic tests are necessary
  • helping maintain maximum function
  • consulting with therapists concerning orthoses and equipment
